Abstract

  • In August 2023, the combined year on year (yoy) inflation for five cities in North Sumatra (Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan and Gunungsitoli) was 2.78 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 113.80. Of the five CPI cities in North Sumatra, the highest yoy inflation occurred in Pematangsiantar at 3.88 percent with a CPI of 115.97 and the lowest occurred in Gunungsitoli at 2.09 percent with a CPI of 116.43.
  • Yoy inflation occurred due to an increase in prices as indicated by an increase in the price index for most expenditure groups, namely the food, beverage and tobacco group by 1.87 percent; clothing and footwear group by 1.55 percent; housing, water, electricity and household fuel group at 0.97 percent; equipment, tools and routine household maintenance group of 1.70 percent; the health group by 3.18 percent; transportation group by 11.95 percent; information, communication and financial services group at 0.08 percent; recreation, sports and culture group at 4.47 percent; the education group by 1.19 percent; food and beverage/restaurant provision group at 2.10 percent; and the personal care and other services group at 3.65 percent.
  • The main commodities contributing to inflation yoy in August 2023 include gasoline, rice, filtered clove cigarettes, intra-city transportation, garlic, purebred chicken eggs and house rentals.
  • The month to month (mtm) deflation rate in August 2023 was 0.07 percent and the year to date (ytd) inflation rate in August 2023 was 0.91 percent.
